Yeseul Song 송예슬

Yeseul is a South Korean born and New York based artist and educator working with technology and interaction. She creates experimental sculptures, interactive installations, digital sketches, and performances to examine the fluid nature of human perception and its relationship with our society, culture, and the environment. Her artwork offers novel perceptual experiences that encourage people to rethink and challenge how they normally perceive, think, and interact with the world. Her on-going project, Invisible Sculptures, suggests more inclusive and creative views of the world through non-visual experience that involves olfactory, auditory, and tactile senses.

Yeseul is currently a Community Engaging Artist Fellow at More Art and Member at New Museum’s NEW INC. She teaches physical computing and interactive art at NYU Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) & Interactive Media Arts (IMA).

Previously, she was a Resident Artist at Museum of Arts and Design, Art & Code Member of New Museum’s NEW INC (in partnership with Rhizome.org), Artist Fellow at the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy, Artist-in-Residence at Mana Contemporary’s New Media Program, Inaugural Fellow of the Future Imagination Fund, and Research Fellow & Teaching Fellow at NYU ITP. She was a part of Dark Matter Manufacturing on 33 Flatbush, Brooklyn. In 2021, she showed her Invisible Sculptures series as a fully funded solo exhibition at the Clayarch Museum, a major public museum in South Korea.

Her work has won the Wave Farm MAAF (Media Arts Assistance Fund), iF Design Award, Communication Arts Interactive Annual, and Lumen Prize Longlist. Her creations have been shown/introduced at places including Clayarch Art Museum (South Korea), Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture (Korea), KBS News (Korean Broadcasting System News), New York Live Arts (NY), Fort Mason Art and Culture Center (SF), Art in Odd Places (NY), Westbeth Gallery (NY), CultureHub (NY), Mana Contemporary (NJ), and IAC Building (NY). She’s a contributor of the SFPC Recode project that has been presented at the Day for Night Festival (TX), Sónar+D 2017 (Barcelona), and Google I/O (SF).

Yeseul is an alumna of NYU ITP, School for Poetic Computation (SFPC) in New York, USA and Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

나의 작품은 인간 감각의 유동성과 인식의 상대성에 대한 탐구이며, 이러한 면모가 인간사회, 자연환경, 그리고 미래와 어떻게 영향을 주고 받는지에 대한 질문이다. 나는 예술과 기술, 디자인의 융합을 통해 참신하고 기발한 감각적 인식적 경험을 창조함으로써 관객들이 평소에 세상을 바라보는 시선과 주변환경과 대화하는 방법에 대해 다시 생각하는 기회를 제공한다. 나에게 작품을 만드는 행위는 세상과 소통하는 중요한 도구이다. 때문에, 나의 작업은 다양한 방식으로 관객의 적극적인 참여를 이끌어내고, 그들의 참여는 작품의 일부가 된다.

진행중인 주요 작업 중 하나인 “보이지 않는 조각들 (Invisible Sculptures)”은 눈에 보이지 않지만 청각, 촉각, 후각을 통해 인지할 수 있는 조각들로, 체험하는 이에게 세상을 바라보는 창의적이고 사려깊은 시선을 제안한다. 2021년, 클레이아크미술관 뉴미디어 개인전 <시시각각;잊다있다>에서 보이지 않는 조각들 여덟 점을 전시하였다.

현재 주로 뉴욕에서 작업 및 교육 활동 중으로, 뉴뮤지엄 뉴잉크(New Meseum’s NEW INC), 뮤지엄오브아트앤디자인(Museum of Art and Design), 뉴욕대 법과대 엔젤버그센터(Engelberg Center), 퓨쳐 이매지네이션 콜라보라토리 펠로우쉽(Future Imagination Collaboratory Fellowship), 마나컨템포러리(Mana Contemporary)의 레지던트 아티스트로 활동했으며, 뉴욕대 티쉬예술대학 인터랙티브 텔레커뮤니케이션프로그램(NYU ITP/IMA)에서 후학을 가르치고 있다. 뉴욕티쉬예술대학, 연세대학교, 시적연산학교를 졸업하였다.
